Samphire scores Michelin star in first six months

A top local restaurant that rebranded after its top chef was 'removed' has scored a Michelin star just six months after its relaunch.

Formerly known as Ormer, Samphire was born after the restaurant suddenly and unexpectedly parted ways with TV star and head chef Shaun Rankin earlier this year.

Speaking at the time, the restaurant's management said that it came as part of a "refocused vision".

Now, half a year after that announcement, Samphire has attained culinary celebrity by obtaining a coveted Michelin star under new head chef Lee Smith.

It joined Michelin star veteran Bohemia on the much-acclaimed list of gourmet restaurants, which kept hold of the prestigious culinary award for the fourteenth year in a row.

The 2019 Awards were announced at the BFI IMAX cinema in London on Monday and both restaurants have expressed their pride at being mentioned in the celebrated list.

Samphire Chief Executive Chula Whelan said: “I cannot describe just how proud and excited we are to have been named in this year’s Michelin Star awards… Of course, we have to ensure our food is of the highest standard, not just on one day but every day. The star is recognition of the whole experience and for that I have to thank each member of my team – they have been outstanding.”

Bohemia Restaurant’s Head Chef Steve Smith commented: “We are absolutely delighted that our passion and commitment has been recognised once again! The whole team has worked so hard over the past year to retain this accolade and I am thrilled… Jersey is renowned for its high standard of gourmet dining, and we are proud to play our part in this.”
