States approve million pound makeover at Crabbé

A new activity centre is to be built at Crabbé so that young Islanders can enjoy the outdoors.

Plans were submitted last September to knock down the cabins and classroom at the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Activity Base in St Mary. They have now been approved, and the job will now go out to tender to a local construction company who will work with Islanders on the States Back to Work scheme to build the new facility.

The project costing £926,000 will include a single-story chalet-style building, housing a new classroom and kitchen, which will accommodate 30 young people and six staff. It will also have better access for disabled Islanders.

Education Sport and Culture Minister Deputy Patrick Ryan said: “Crabbé offers young people an opportunity to enjoy the natural environment – a valuable part of growing up in Jersey. I am delighted that the plans have now been approved and that our children will have access to this new and improved facility.”

Assistant Treasury Minister Deputy Eddie Noel said: “This scheme will play a part in ensuring our local facilities can meet the future needs of Jersey’s young people. The development will provide a further boost for the local construction industry, and I look forward to seeing the progress this year.”
