Cloud could stop you getting a glimpse of tonight's Supermoon

Monday 14 November 2016

It's bigger and brighter than it's been for almost 70 years but the cloudy weather today could stop you getting a good look at the Supermoon.

Jersey Met say you might get a glimpse of the big astronomical event late this afternoon when the moon comes closer to the earth than it has since 1948.

Forecaster Peter Munns said: "It's going to be mainly cloudy. There will be some brighter intervals but there is a small chance when the moon comes up that you will be able to see it at about 16:30 or 17:00, but it's going to be a glimpse through some misty cloud.

It will be out again tomorrow, albeit looking a little bit smaller but Mr Munns said there's even less chance of seeing it.

He said: "There's probably much less of a chance of seeing it tomorrow, we're into a real warm sector, foggy situation with lots of low cloud so tonight is your best chance."

Jersey Astronomy Club Founder Neil Mahrer said: "It's impressively big and bright at the moment. It's closer than usual and it's most impressive at full moon. If you see it, it does look bigger than usual.

Mr Mahrer said the Astronomy Club will be meeting at the Sir Patrick Moore Astronomy Centre at Les Creux in St Brelade at 20:00 tonight and will have their scope up and running at the observatory for anyone who wants to go along to try and get a look at it.

There won't be another Supermoon lighting up our skies until 2034.
