Surfing school now open to all pupils

Sunday 26 March 2017

La Moye Surf Club is expanding its program to offer extra-curricular surfing lessons to all year 5 and 6 pupils during the Summer term.

St Peter's primary school teacher and PE co-ordinator, Gareth Bayley has decided to expand its surfing club to all western parish schools with the support of Mark Durbano, owner of Laneez Surf School. The new school will be known as Western Schools Surf Club.

The decision was prompted by Gareth Bayley's move to St Peter's school. He previously taught at La Moye whose pupils were the first to benefit from the surfing classes. Upon leaving, pupils and their parents asked what would happen to the surfing school and Mr Bayley started planning to expand the club to open the classes to a wider group of pupils from the western schools.

He explains: "I’ve focused mainly on the western schools purely because of their proximity to St Ouen’s Bay, but this does not mean pupils from other primary schools are not welcome. Far from it, as long as you can get to the beach for a 4 o’clock start, you’re more than welcome!"

Classes will start on 21 April and will run every Friday for 12 weeks from 16:00 to 17:30. If all goes to plan, Gareth Bayley hopes to keep the classes running into the Autumn Term, whilst the water is still warm. He is also planning family events and barbecues during the holidays.
