Take off with a £2,000 flying scholarship

Saturday 21 February 2015

Disabled and disadvantaged Islanders are being encouraged to apply for the chance to experience the thrill and freedom of flying.

There’s £2,000 worth of training with the Jersey Aero Club up for grabs this year and the Helping Wings bursary will help get one lucky Islander ready to fly solo.

The Charity’s Chairman Eveline Hawkin said: “We’re really excited about this year’s launch. We’ve changed the application process to allow islanders to nominate a disabled family member, friend or colleague who they feel would get the most benefit from this scholarship.”

Over 300 disadvantaged or disabled children and young adults have enjoyed a flight around Jersey with volunteer pilots since 2008 and Helping Wings plans to buy a special set of flying controls so that more disabled people can complete their private pilot's licence.

Anyone over the age of 15 can apply and you don’t need to have a flying medical. Application forms can be downloaded here and have to be in by Monday 21 April.

The Ports of Jersey are covering the cost of the scholarship for the third year running.
