Four people hospitalised after serious car crash

Two elderly people are receiving treatment in hospital following a serious car crash in Trinity yesterday afternoon, which is now being investigated by Police. Two other people were treated in hospital but released the same day.

The two-car collision happened near the entrance to the Zoo shortly before 14:30, and involved an 81-year-old man and a 72-year-old woman in one vehicle, and two 17-year-olds in the other.

Both teenagers have since been discharged from hospital.

A 17-year-old was arrested on Sunday afternoon in the aftermath of the crash on suspicion of dangerous driving, but has since been released on bail. They have not been charged.

Firefighters had to cut one of the occupants from their car by removing the boot lid, while paramedics gave emergency medical treatment to two other occupants by the side of the road. 

The Health Department have now confirmed that the two pensioners – brought to hospital by ambulance – are still undergoing treatment. Both are said to be in a "stable" condition.

The two teenagers – a male and a female – were treated in the Hospital’s emergency department around 15:30 yesterday. They were discharged around three hours later.

Describing what happened, Watch Commander Richard Ryan from the Fire Service said: “On arrival two of the vehicle occupants were receiving emergency medical treatment on the roadside and one person was trapped inside their car due to injuries and vehicle damage.

“Working with the on-scene paramedics, firefighters quickly got to work with stabilisation equipment, hydraulic rescue tools and casualty care. The boot lid was removed and space created to allow access and egress for the trapped casualty, who was extricated onto a long board before being transferred to hospital by ambulance.”
