The Tide is High: Island on Orange Alert for Saturday

Friday 19 August 2016

The Jersey MET Department have issued an orange Tide Warning for Saturday with high tides expected along the Island’s south coast and the risk of some flooding.

Islanders are being advised to take caution as large ‘waves breaking over the sea walls are expected to cause problems with water and debris on roads along Jersey’s south coast on Saturday's high tides.’ It is also possible that some flooding may occur.

Saturday’s high tides at 08:34 and at 20:54 are expected to bring waves measuring at over eleven metres high. Wave height is normally measured from the back of the wave and is calculated as the vertical distance between crest (the highest point of the wave above the waterline) and trough (the lowest point on the wave below the waterline).

The duty forecaster at Jersey MET has advised Islanders to keep up to date with the latest information either on Jersey MET’s website here or on their Twitter page @Jersey_Met. They will be reviewing the situation as and when they have more information. They have also advised Islanders around the south coast to take the appropriate precautions of following the advice of the authorities and keeping a sensible distance from the sea wall.
