A book to help parents discuss sex education with their pre-school and primary schoolchildren is being revived by a Jersey charity.
The 94-page user-friendly book has been updated by ACET Jersey (AIDS Care Education and Training) and gives help and reassurance about the emotional and physical aspects of growing up and forming healthy relationships. The Parent Toolkit includes a section about online safety and provides practical tips on how to safeguard their children online.
10,000 copies will be distributed to schools over the coming weeks. A further 2,000 copies will be available to families with children under the age of 12 from health visitors, nurseries and the charity.
Fiona Poolton from ACET said: “We want to empower parents as educators of their own children and give them the confidence to talk to their children about sensitive issues around growing up, sex and relationships.
"We recognise the need to keep our children safe and feel that it’s important to include updated information about online safety within this edition and practical tips to help parents in this area. We want to ensure that children have the information and support to help them make safe choices.”
The charity has updated the Toolkit with the help of a £25,000 donation from the Lloyds Bank Foundation for the Channel Islands.
Lloyds Bank Foundation executive director John Hutchins said: “We were delighted to have been involved with this project which is unique within the Channel islands and one which can only enhance childrens' overall education."
