Santa has been given special permission to fly into Jersey for a rather different Christmas lights switch-on this year.

Rather than the traditional gathering with music, performances, sing-a-longs and fireworks in the Royal Square, Father Christmas will instead be presiding over a social media celebration tomorrow.

Due to covid restrictions around gatherings and social distancing, the Parish of St. Helier is producing a video, in partnership with retailers, showing Santa - who has been granted key worker status - preparing the town centre for the festive season and encouraging islanders to shop locally.

Video: A teaser posted online.

Constable Simon Crowcroft said: “I am delighted that the parish, supported by Jersey Development Company, has found a way to keep alive our much loved tradition of the Christmas Light Switch On, which is a major event in our Island calendar, enjoyed by Islanders and their families.

“While the pandemic prevents us holding our traditional event, the launch of the Virtual Christmas Light Switch On is a fantastic way to mark the beginning of the Fête dé Noué in these difficult times.”

You can watch the celebrations live on Thursday HERE.
