Traffic chaos over Liberation flags

Tuesday 05 May 2015

Traffic on the way into town from the west was brought to a standstill this morning… by loose flags.

Police had to close the eastbound carriage of the Avenue because strong winds had damaged the fixings of flags put up to mark Liberation Day on Saturday. Police say that a loose flag being blown around by the wind smashed through the window of one car, but that the driver was not hurt.

Firefighters and workers from TTS went to the Avenue to try to make the flags safe, but police close the road at around 8.15 am because the wind was blowing them into the carriageway, making the road unsafe to drive.

Police reopened it at around 10.55 am, but the traffic delays had caused long tailbacks, with drivers stuck in traffic all the way from St Aubin.

Bus drivers told passengers earlier in the morning that they might be better off walking because delays were expected to go on for some time.
