Triathlon club organises first race since virus restrictions

Saturday 04 July 2020

The Jersey Triathlon Club is holding a sprint distance Aquathlon tomorrow for its club members, consisting of a 750m swim and 5km run - its first since the onset of the pandemic.

The club say the event has been carefully planned to ensure it complies with government guidelines.

The swim-run event is open only to club members and numbers are limited to 40 competitors across all age categories.

The race is taking place on Sunday 5 July at Jardin de la Mer, St Helier, from 07:00.

Club President, Stephen Hill, said they want to “reassure” the public who might see the competitors racing on Sunday that the event has been “thoroughly thought out” with both their safety and that of their members in mind.

He says anyone concerned about the event can speak to one of the marshals.

Races organised by the Jersey Triathlon Club are usually open to both members and non-members of all abilities and have both children’s and adult age categories.

Stephen said: “We are, of course, disappointed that this race is not inclusive in the way that our events usually are but like all sports and activities clubs at the moment we are doing our best to bring back the sport that we love without putting anyone at risk.”

“The Club will continue to follow the advice of the covid-19 officer and if all goes well we will try and more races later this year and look forward to resuming a fuller calendar of events in 2021,” he said.

UPDATE: The event has now been cancelled due to high winds. (05/07/2020)
