Triathlon hits record number of athletes

Saturday 30 June 2018

Almost 600 competitors will be swimming, cycling and running around part of the island this Sunday as part of the annual Accuro Jersey Triathlon, the largest number the event has seen.

Hosted by 3D Events, the triathlon is centred around the Waterfront and stretches over the west of the island.

It has four levels of ability so beginners and experienced athletes can all take part. The longest and most difficult level is Olympic, followed by Jersey Sprint and Super Sprint. Younger competitors have their own level, the Junior Triathlon.

The swim course takes place in front of Elizabeth Castle, the bike course covers the west of the island ranging in flat, steep and long sections. The run course is the last part of the race, where competitors will run around the Waterfront.

Accuro Trust will be sponsoring the event for the third year running, with Managing Director Paul Douglas saying: “We are delighted to have seen the event grow from strength to strength.

“The Accuro Jersey Triathlon provides a platform for triathletes, whether they are beginners or seasoned athletes, to test themselves on a challenging course which brings in some of Jersey’s most beautiful scenery.”

Andrew Thomas, Managing Director of 3D Events and organiser of the event said: “Accuro share our vision to produce a national standard triathlon event here in Jersey, capable of attracting people of all ages and abilities from both on and off Island.

“Like us, they are passionate about the continued growth of this local sporting event for the benefit of our community, economy and official charity.”

The official charity for this year’s event is the Oscar Maclean Foundation. Oscar passed away after his fight with a rare and aggressive brain tumour and the foundation was set up in his memory. It provides support for Jersey children and their families suffering from cancer and chronic illnesses.

Competitors are encouraged to help raise money for the official charity but are welcome to support any other charities. Entrants are now able to set up their own online fundraising page, or use a sponsorship form.

Victoria Avenue will be closed in the westbound direction between West park and Bel Royal from 07:15 until 14:00 and traffic will be diverted along St. Aubin’s Inner Road. The first race will depart at 08:30.
