Tributes after popular Alderney radio broadcaster dies in holiday car crash

Wednesday 27 March 2024

There has been an outpouring of condolences following the death of well-known Alderney radio station manager who was involved in a car accident while on holiday in Egypt.

Tim Butler had been part of Quay FM for more than 20 years.

In a statement, the non-profit organisation shared the news "with great sorrow" that Mr Butler and his partner, Jill Benfield, were involved in a car accident on their way to the airport at the end of their holiday in Egypt.

Quay FM said: “Sadly, Tim took the brunt of the impact and he passed away late last night.

“Jill is okay, badly bruised and shaken and she is being assisted by the British consul, and hopefully will be home in the next few days.”

A member of the Quay FM team added that they have been honoured by the outpouring of condolences for Mr Butler during yesterday's tribute show.

The President of the States of Alderney has joined countless others in offering his condolences.

"It is impossible to describe the shock that was felt throughout the Island at the tragic news of Tim's untimely death," said States President, William Tate.

"Tim was part of the very fabric of the Island. His contribution to the wellbeing of the Island has been in evidence for many years. Across multiple clubs and organisations he brought his infectious personality and unique take on life, to the benefit of everybody he shared his time with.

"He was just one of those people that made you feel better for knowing him.

"It will be heartbreaking for so many to tune in to the Quay Fm Morning Show and not be greeted by his infectious personality. He was much loved by all who listened to his show. He will be a hard act to follow.

"Our hearts go out to Tim's family. The community stand as one with them in these heartbreaking times."
