Tributes pour in for "generous and kind-hearted" market shop owner

Thursday 09 November 2023

Customers, friends and fellow Central Market tenants have paid tribute to the owner of a popular "treasure trove" of antiques and secondhand goods after he died at the weekend.

Elysium Emporium owner Iain Dedman was described as "generous, kind-hearted and talented" in a social media post confirming he had passed away unexpectedly on 4 November.

His business, described by Jersey Markets as "a treasure trove of pre-loved goods and furniture", had been a mainstay both in the Central Market and at antiques fairs.

Jersey Markets said it was "extremely saddened" by the news, while the team at Donna's Cake Decorating Supplies said they were "heartbroken by the loss of our dear friend and fellow tenant Iain, the most lovely person you could meet."

"When we were setting up our shop Iain helped us out so much, and it was wonderful to see him set up his dream business within the market awhile after. Iain will be missed by so many," they said.

The owner of Rococo Jersey described Iain as "one of the sweetest, kindest men I've ever known" and said he would be "sorely missed".

Louise Booth commented, saying: "He was such a lovely man. I loved popping in for a chat and looking at all his lovely stuff."

Alyson Byrnes wrote: "I had the pleasure of meeting him a number of times and have some amazing pieces from his shop. He was so very kind to me many times especially when I was new to the island."

With an eye on environmental issues, Iain enjoyed up-cycling and transforming old items of furniture - as well as chatting to clients about their home décor needs and sourcing items for them.

Material Girl, a fellow upcycler, described him as having been excited to move into a new shop.

She said: "The last time I spoke to Ian was about two weeks ago where he kindly took some of my handmade pumpkins to sell in his shop. He was so excited about moving into the new shop. Ian was a lovely guy who always had time for a chat. Going to miss him."
