Wave of tributes for the surfing tailor

Monday 16 November 2020

Tributes have been pouring in for a Jersey tailor and surfer described as “a true gentleman” and “a gem” by those who knew him.

Vincent Vasiliou worked as a tailor in Jersey for over 40 years, having previously started his career at London’s Savile Row.

He eventually moved to Jersey, where he established himself in a shop first in Sand Street, and then another in Cattle Street called Wings. He then opened the shop that would make him a familiar face to all islanders looking for a sharp suit – Riva, which was one of the first to open in the newly rebuilt West's Centre in 1978.

Following his time at Riva, in 2012 he began offering bespoke services with his Made to Measure Bespoke Tailoring Service, going directly to islanders to give them his much-coveted advice.

Since news of his passing reached friends, loved ones and former clients last week, Facebook has been flooded with tributes.

Remembering Vincent, one commenter hailed the quality of his tailoring, saying: “Yet another icon of my time in Jersey gone. I came over here to the USA with a full wardrobe including five suits. I was afraid that I couldn’t get the same quality over here back then.

“Vince was a gem and a true gentleman. I very nearly bought his Rolls Royce. He’ll not be forgotten by me. It looks like heaven will be getting some quality gear and a very good friend.”

Another heaped praise on his abilities as a salesman: “Saddened to hear that Vince has passed away, I remember one afternoon walking past Riva & Vince inviting me in for a coffee. That coffee cost me £800 in new clothes! What a salesman and what a gentleman too. RIP buddy.”

Outside of his tailoring, Vince was also a well-known face on the Jersey surf scene, with one tribute reading, “RIP Vince. A gent and Jersey surf scene legend,” and another recalling how “we windsurfed on the bathing pool at West Park in a gale one autumn.”
