Tumble dryer ‘caused severe flat fire’

Monday 10 January 2022

A blaze that left a third floor flat “severely damaged” is believed to have been started by a tumble dryer.

The fire broke out at Liberation Court around 14:00 yesterday afternoon (Sunday 9 January) and Brooklyn Street had to be closed while a crew of nine worked to put it out.

When they arrived, the communal hallway was filled with smoke.

Two firefighters went into the flat to put out the blaze, while a further crew evacuated the building. No one was hurt.

By around 16:00, the road was reopened.

Watch Commander Craig Channing has since praised the original caller for making a timely call to the Fire Service and the occupier for closing the external door to the flat upon discovering the fire.

“These quick and decisive actions prevented a more serious fire from developing in a communal block of flats and enabled crews to quickly gain entry and extinguish the fire,” Jersey Fire and Rescue Service said.

They added that early investigations indicated that the cause of the fire was a tumble dryer that had been in use at the time.
