Tumble dryer fire sets laundrette alight

Wednesday 28 November 2018

A fire broke out in a laundrette last night, causing many residents living in the flats above to evacuate their homes until the flames and smoke were brought under control.

The Fire Service received multiple calls about the fire in Gloucester Street yesterday evening and two fire engines headed to the laundrette.

The calls came in at around 20:50 and firefighters set about putting out the fire which had broken out in the ground-floor laundrette Rainbow Clothes Care.

Four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus and carrying water jets entered the laundrette and managed to locate the fire and put it out.

In a post on Facebook from the Fire Service, Watch Commander Ryan Hall extended his thanks to “the residents for their full cooperation during this incident.”

Today's Duty Manager Mark Bailey-Walker told Express that the “most likely cause was a fault with an electrical tumble dryer.”

Mr Bailey-Walker added that no damage was done to the flats above the ground floor laundrette, but that after the fire was extinguished, the smoke had to be cleared from the building before residents could return to their homes.

The Duty Manager explained that this “slight smoke logging was cleared very quickly”.
