Pluck up the strength to bust some turkey

Tuesday 31 December 2019

Islanders feeling stuffed after festive feasting - or those who fancy working up an appetite ahead of another huge meal - are being urged to pluck up the courage to join a turkey-busting walk tomorrow.

The National Trust is holding what's become an annual event at St. Ouen, and anyone keen to talk part is asked to meet in the carpark at Les Laveurs on the Five Mile Road (opposite Jersey Pearl) at 11.00.

There's no need to pre-book, walkers are invited to just turn up, but are advised to wear suitable footwear and outer clothing. Dogs on leads are also welcome.

Any donations raised on the day will go towards the Coastline Campaign.

The Trust's vision is to ensure that remaining areas of unspoilt coastline are permanently protected, clean and healthy, rich in wildlife and accessible for both Islanders and visitors to enjoy. They have pledged to permanently safeguard a further 1,000 vergées of unspoilt coastline over the next twenty years.

The Trust is totally self-funding and independent of local government. It costs the Trust £3,000 per day to care for its 1,700 vergées of land (300 hectares), covering 170 sites, 30 historic buildings and 19,000 metres of public footpaths.

The Trust employs 16 staff and delivers over 120 events every year. The National Trust for Jersey is dedicated to preserving our beautiful natural spaces, wildlife and historic buildings for the long term benefit of the Island.

Tomorrow's guide is Bob Tompkins. The walk will follow the coastal path as far as the Square Fort. It will then cross the road and drop down into the Maritime Grassland on the edge of St Ouen’ Pond.

Mike Stentiford

Skirting Le Noir Pré, it will cross over Chemin de L’Ouziere and ramble through the undulating landscape of Les Mielles before arriving at the Frances Le Sueur Centre.

Mike Stentiford will then talk about the future plans for the Centre and the National Park after which chocolates and a nip of sloe gin will be available to fortify everyone before returning to the car park.
