Unattended chip pan sends kitchen up in flames

Thursday 28 July 2022

A “briefly unattended” chip pan was the cause of a major kitchen fire at a block of town flats yesterday.

Two fire engines were sent to Pier Road after a 999 call around 17:30 and the road was closed while the Jeresy Fire and Rescue crew dealt with the blaze.

The fire was focused in the kitchen and "quickly extinguished" by two firefighters wearing breathing equipment before it was able to spread further.

Station Commander Ryan Hall has since warned: "Even only for those brief moments, when using hot oils for cooking it is those short moments that the situations change.

"This incident highlights that when using hot oils or chip pans that if you need to leave the room, even for short periods that you remove the source of heat to avoid over heating."
