Unemployment levels remain at a low

Unemployment remains at its lowest level since at least 2011, according to the latest report on islanders actively seeking work.

Figures released by Statistics Jersey show that 610 jobseekers were registered last month, a level which Assistant Social Security Minister Malcolm Ferey said boded well for anyone currently looking for employment.

"There are opportunities for anyone who wants to get into the workplace, and I would like to remind people that the Back to Work team can assist with creating a CV, developing skills and building confidence when preparing for an interview," Deputy Ferey said.

June's snapshot of those seeking work shows that 330 females were registered compared with 280 males, while 85% were categorised as being British or Jersey. Of the total, 170 – or 28% – were receiving long-term incapacity allowance.

Although unemployment data held by the government goes back further than 2011, recent information is modelled on the requirement – brought in as part of income support, which was introduced in 2008 – for individuals to register as actively seeking work, so that the information reflects all those effectively registered as unemployed.
