12,000 covid jabs given so far

Friday 05 February 2021

Nearly 12,000 islanders have had at least one dose of the covid-19 vaccine, according to new figures.

There have been 11,707 first doses and 3,131 second doses in total across the island.

89% (921) of care home residents have been given their first dose, and 76% (787) have been given their second dose.

Equally 78% (1,095) of care home workers have received their first dose, and 60% (843) have received their second.

The current vaccination programme is currently open to those age 70-74 years and people aged 16-69 classified as ‘clinically extremely vulnerable.'

Those who are on the less extreme end of clinical risk, and classified as ‘clinically at risk (moderate risk)’ are expected to receive the vaccine later this month.

The majority of those who work in health but are not clinically facing and have no face-to-face contacts with patients, are not on the current priority list – despite this, a small number of people who perform non-patient facing roles have been given the vaccine.

While updated statistics on age groups were released yesterday, a breakdown of the vaccines administered by priority group is still not available.

Officials said they were working on data quality for those in Tier 2.

The vast majority of first dose vaccines have been the Pfizer vaccine, making up for broadly 70-80% of the jabs.

In comparison, around 20 – 30% have been Astrazeneca (the 'Oxford vaccine'), though there are plans to increase this once more becomes available.

Research released earlier this week showed that the Oxford vaccine not only stops individuals from becoming seriously ill with covid, but also cuts transmission rates by up to two thirds.
