We’re slowly getting there…
From tomorrow at 08:00 you’ll be able to vote for the candidate you want to replace former Senator Zoe Cameron.
The polls close at eight in the evening, and by around ten we should know who the winner is.
With most pundits predicting low turnouts – typical of by-elections – we might find out the name of the new senator-elect even earlier.
Unlike a general election – where you can sometimes vote for up to eight candidates for senator, a constable, and depending on where you live, up to four deputies – which can really make for a tough task for counters, tomorrow’s vote is altogether more straight forward. You can only vote for one candidate. So the counters only have to add up all the votes for each candidate and then declare the result. The declarations from each of the 12 parishes are then totalled and the candidate with the most votes gets elected. Simple.
But what if you can’t wait until tomorrow to find out who the smart money is on?
That’s where Bailiwick’s election tortoise comes in, in partnership with Durrell. We’ve asked him to try and predict the result. In yesterday’s video he was under starter’s orders. Today he’s slowly making his way to the candidates’ election photos stuck on stakes on the lawn at Durrell and urged forward by the reward of sweet potato and a strawberry.
So who will he chose…? The race is on. Watch Part 2 as he slowly – very slowly – makes his choice. Will he get there before the result is declared?
