A telecoms firm is sponsoring professional singing lessons for local school children in the lead up to Jersey Sings 2017.

More than 1,400 children are set to take part in the Jersey Sings event, organised by Music in Action, and Sure is supporting the schools' workshop programme.

As part of the programme, international conductor David Lawrence will run workshops with pupils in April and May.

He is one of the UK’s most experienced conductors for choirs of young people and he has conducted the London Philharmonic Choir as well as the national youth choirs of Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.

Jersey Sings director, Caroline Buchanan, said: “These workshops offer valuable additional support and encouragement for the performers’ development and overall experience of the Jersey Sings project. We’re incredibly grateful to Sure for their sponsorship and enabling us to incorporate these workshops into this six month educational experience.”

The workshops are designed to give the choirs a chance to practice their songs with Mr Lawrence before the concert so they can get a better understanding of what it will be like performing as part of a 700-strong choir.

Sure’s PR and marketing manager Natalie Lynch said: “Jersey Sings gives the Island’s school children a truly unique opportunity to perform in an arena setting in front of a large audience.

“Sure is proud to be involved with such a fantastic initiative and we know that the workshops are a valuable chance for the students to address any concerns ahead of the event and ensure they are excited and ready to perform on the night.”

The Jersey Sings event will take place at Fort Regent on 13 and 14 June and will feature students from 26 local schools.

The pupils from across the Island are expected to come together to form a choir and perform hits from the likes of Adele and Coldplay, classics from Abba and Queen and also songs from Disney.
