Thousands of patient care records are to go online in a bid to make the Island's health service safer for patients and cheaper to run.

It's hoped that by 2019, there will be a central online medical record for each Islander - which will also be accessible by the NHS in case of treatment in the UK - so that you won't have to repeat your medical history each time you speak to a different doctor or nurse.

The 'Jersey Care Record' was unveiled by Digital Jersey at their annual presentation today. Andrew Frith, Digital Health and Care Consultant said:

"We are able to create a portable care record, which moves with patient as they access different institutions. It means that the care professional at any one of those institutions at any contact point can see the information about that person at that time, and that means safer care, it means more efficient care it means less wasted appointments in hospital as the right information isn't there at that point in time. It also means that if something happens on that journey to change things...with a digital record with digital joined up health care...we can make those changes at different points in the process, and be more efficient in using the limited resources we have available."

He added: "What we're talking about here with the Jersey Care Record is building on he foundations of what we have already got, and extending those to integrate with health care services across the Island. So we expect patients to be able to access their records, so they will need to be properly properly authenticated and authorised to be able to get into their record, as will every health care professional on the Island - we will know who is accessing that information, that they are accessing it in the right context at the right moment in the time, and that we have an audit trail as to who has accessed that information at any point."
