Volunteer admitted to Order of St. John

An islander who joined St. John Ambulance as a badger in the 1990s and went on to become a youth leader has been invested as a Member in the Order of St. John.

Sarah Jane Edmead travelled to the headquarters of the Order of St. John at St. John’s Gate in London for her investiture.

Her admission to the order was approved by Her Majesty the Queen, the Sovereign Head of the order.

Ms Edmead joined St. John Ambulance as a badger in 1993. She moved to the cadets in 1994 and then the St. Martin adult unit in 2002. In 2009, she became a youth leader, a post she continues to hold.

She is said to have demonstrated an empathy and passion for working with young people, which made her an obvious choice to be appointed as badger leader for Helvetia Cadet and Badger Unit.

The team at St. John says she has consistently provided invaluable support to her unit and the Commandery, organising and running camps, assisting at competitions, chaperoning members during off-island events and assisting cadet leader courses.

Such is her encouragement and excellent training skills that her badger teams have represented Jersey at National Finals on a number of occasions.

In addition to her commitment to Helvetia Badgers, Ms Edmead didn't hesitate to step in to run a newly formed badger unit, following the unexpected resignation of its leader. The unit would have folded without her intervention.

When her second badger set reached cadet age, she even volunteered to form a new cadet unit to ensure that her charges remained in St. John. This unit is now thriving and one of the largest in Jersey solely due to Ms Edmead's drive, commitment and enthusiasm.

Ms Edmead has shown "outstanding voluntary commitment to the Commandery, particularly to our badgers and cadets, and we are indebted to her for her long service and dedication to St. John, Jersey."

She previously received the Grand Prior's Award in 2002 and the Service Medal of the Order of St. John in 2012.
