Walk north to south to help fight diabetes

Sunday 29 April 2018

Diabetes Jersey will once again be organising a ‘north to south’ country walk on 6 May, starting from Grosnez Castle to finish at Goose Green in Beaumont.

The eight mile walk will be confined almost entirely to country lanes that cross the island from north to south revealing, for many walkers, views of the countryside with which they might be unfamiliar.

Peter Tabb, Diabetes Jersey’s spokesman, explained: “The North-to- South is one of Diabetes Jersey’s most successful fundraisers and last year more than 400 walkers took part and helped us raise more than £12,000. This is the sixth walk we have organised and we find that walkers really enjoy the opportunity of seeing the beauty and diversity of the Island’s countryside rather than the usual familiarity of the walks around St Aubin’s Bay.”

The route is approximately eight miles and explores the many country lanes of St. Ouen and St. Mary, and included in the walk will be the entire length of the new ‘pedestrian way’ all along St. Peter’s Valley. The route is entirely on public thoroughfares and is wheelchair-friendly throughout.

To help walkers reach the starting line, free coaches will be provided from St. Helier and will from Beaumont after the walk. The registration fee in advance is £10,  including a free commemorative baseball cap. Anyone joining in on the day can do so for a donation of £20.

Funds raised will help raise funds that will go to supporting the 4,000 and more people in Jersey with diabetes and Diabetes Jersey’s commitment to fund staffing and services at the Diabetes Centre at Overdale Hospital at a cost over three years of circa £180,000.
