Scam phone call warning

Thursday 29 December 2016

Festive phone calls might not be all they seem, and could end up costing you more than you think.

The Jersey Fraud Prevention Forum is warning Islanders about 'Wangiri fraud' – a scam that started in Japan and targets unsuspecting recipients.

Wangiri is a Japanese phrase which literally means “one (ring) and cut”. The scammer calls your number but hangs up before you can reply. If you do return the call you’re changed a premium rate.

JT and Sure say if you don’t recognise the number, do not call back and make sure you report the suspect caller.

Kathyrn Garland, JT Fraud and Revenue Assurance Manager says: “if you feel you have received a suspicious phone call please contact your provider with the date and time of the call, your telephone number and the number which called you. If this information is supplied to your provider they will endeavour to trace the call and block the originator if appropriate”.
