WANTED: Temporary home for 41 gorillas

Tuesday 24 September 2019

Have you got a shed, garage or a living room large enough to host 41 life-sized gorilla sculptures? If so, you might be the person Durrell is looking for.

With only three weeks to go before the end of the ‘Go Wild Gorilla’ sculpture trail, Durrell has launched an appeal to find a temporary home for the troop of sculptures before they are auctioned off for charity.

The trail was launched by Durrell at the end of July as part of the charity’s 60th anniversary celebrations, and to raise funds for a new state-of-the-art gorilla house at Jersey Zoo.

Local and international artists – some of them completely new to sculpture trails - took up the challenge of imagining designs for a gorilla and submitted them for Durrell’s troop of sponsors to select from.

From banks to coffee shops, hotels and law firms, each gorilla was then ‘adopted’ by a local business.

Express, which is supporting the initiative as its media partner, also joined in, adopted businessman Mr G.Rilla painted by Donna Newman, who currently lives in West's Centre.

Once completed, the gorillas were then positioned around the island, from Plemont headland to La Hocq and La Corbière to Fliquet Bay.

After two months out in the open, the troop is now preparing for pastures new. The sculptures will go to the highest bidder at the Grand Gorilla Auction at The Royal Yacht on 6 November, but, before then, Durrell has launched an appeal to find a temporary home for them.

They are looking for a space that would be available from 14 October to 30 November where the gorillascan be “fixed-up, painted and made auction ready.”

The space would need running water, electricity as well as space for the artists and technicians to work on the sculptures. Ideally, it would also need to be accessible by lorry or van, have double doors and be secure at night.

The ‘Go Wild Gorillas’ team said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to become a part of the Go Wild Gorillas trail, and to help an amazing cause in the process!”
