WATCH: What to expect from Jersey's covid app

A new smartphone app to alert islanders when they have been near someone with covid is launching today.

The free app has been developed by Digital Jersey and technology developer, NearForm, and will inform islanders if they have been either within two metres or spent more than 15 minutes in the presence of someone with the virus.

It uses Bluetooth technology to exchange anonymous codes called Random IDs with others app users in the area throughout the day – its Random IDs change regularly, meaning it won’t be able to identify you or your location. 

If it identifies that contact with a Random ID from someone with covid was close and long enough to be a risk, then it will alert and advise its user to talk to the Contact Tracing Team and to get specific advice on the situation.

It is up to the user whether they want to share their Random IDs with the app if they have tested positive for covid. 

The app also features general guidance and updates on the latest covid news. 

It is now available via the Apple App Store, and Google Play after a short delay due to a technical issue.
