A major survey will look at just how much Islanders are really spending on online shopping, what we think about speed limits and our housing needs over the next few years.

Over the next few days more than 3,000 survey forms covering all kinds of aspects of Island life will be dropping through letterboxes, as statisticians take on one of their biggest jobs of the year – finding out what people in Jersey think.

The 2015 Jersey Annual Social Survey is the eleventh time that the States Statistics Unit has run the project to gauge Islanders’ opinions and feelings.

The last survey revealed a few interesting facts about Islanders’ views in 2014:

  • 8% of us are behind on our rent.
  • The top political priority was immigration.
  • Driving to work and smoking rates are the same as they were in 2009.

Some of the other areas covered in the surveys that are going out now cover health, unemployment, public services and pensions.

Dr Duncan Gibaut, Chief Statistician for Jersey, said: “The Social Survey is an invaluable source of information for developing evidence-based policy, and its continued usefulness depends on the public’s support.

“We have had a very good response in previous years, and from this we know that people found that the topics were relevant to their lives.

“I would like to reassure everyone that all responses to the survey will be treated in the strictest confidence and will only be used to produce grouped numbers.

“So if you do receive a form please complete it and send it back. By doing so you’ll help us all gain a better understanding of islander’s opinions and way of life.”
