When is ‘Thurver'...?

Tuesday 12 September 2023

Islanders took to social media in confusion yesterday after spotting a rather peculiar Ports of Jersey sign which promised access to a local pier pending ‘Thurver’ notice.

In a post shared on the 'Jersey by Phone Camera' Facebook group, an islander captured the enigmatic sign at the Pier Head.

The sign explained that access to the pier may be restricted at times from Tuesday 29 August "untill thurver notice".

One islander suggested that perhaps Thurver is "a bit like Thursday but a little bit further", whilst another said: "Maybe they were going to write Thursday but edited it when it overran."

One commenter joked that it was "a posh way to spell further".

In the end, the mystery of 'Thurver' was short-lived.

A spokesperson from Ports of Jersey confirmed that they noticed the post on social media and have since removed the sign.

It seems that 'Thurver' will remain a day that never graced the calendar...
