Which Jersey restaurant has lost its Michelin star?

Thursday 17 September 2015

One Jersey eatery was left with a bad taste in its mouth after losing its coveted Michelin star in the latest edition of the prestigious guide.

Jersey still has three restaurants on the list, but Tassili at the Grand Hotel has lost its Michelin Star in the latest version of the guide, which is out today.

The Island’s three Michelin-starred restaurants are:

- Ocean, at the Atlantic Hotel in La Pulente, under Head Chef Mark Jordan.

- Bohemia, in Green Street, under Head Chef Steve Smith.

- Ormer, in Don Street, under Head Chef Shaun Rankin.

The three eateries are on the list of 169 starred restaurants in the Michelin Guide, which was formed more than a hundred years ago by two French brothers.

Although they started the guide to places to eat in order to promote their tyre business, the guide has become the most prestigious list of quality restaurants in the world.

Speaking about retaining their starred status, the three Jersey chefs were thrilled with the news.

Ocean at the Atlantic retained the listing for the tenth consecutive year, and Mark Jordain said: “‘I am really proud of the brigades at Ocean Restaurant and Mark Jordan at the Beach, who work tirelessly to deliver the impeccable standards required to impress the Michelin inspectors every year.

“We are committed to using the freshest local ingredients to produce exciting dining experiences for our guests, and we hope to build on this success in the future.”

Bohemia Head Chef Steve Smith was one of the youngest chefs in the country to achieve a Michelin star over 15 years ago, at the age of just 24.

He said: "We are delighted that our passion and commitment for offering the highest quality cuisine has been recognised once again. Our whole kitchen brigade has worked day and night over the past year to retain this accolade and I am overjoyed at Michelin’s decision.”

And Shaun Rankin from Ormer – who was delighted to have kept the Michelin star for the third year running – saying: “It’s not been an easy year for Jersey hospitality with a skills shortage hitting the entire industry.

“We move forward positively with new ambitions set out by Visit Jersey to strengthen the visitor economy, up skill local talent and use food tourism to attract new markets.

“I have great ambitions for Ormer this year and my time spent in London is providing new culinary inspiration for our creations. I will continue to help make Jersey a fantastic destination for both locals and tourists alike and I thank all our loyal customers at Ormer for a wonderful year.”
