Who’s going to travel down the yellow brick road?

Wednesday 04 February 2015

A new company that has set up in the Island is hoping one local graduate will be keen to follow the yellow brick road back to a career in Jersey that could see them travelling the world.

Montrose have been on the hunt for months for the right person to join their team and have enlisted the help of Yellow Brick - the Graduate Internship scheme - that looks to find the right roles for our home grown talent and encourage them back to the Island.

Montrose, an international development project management consultancy firm, is a young company with a number of projects across the developing world including Papua New Guinea, Myanmar, Indonesia and many countries in Africa and works with organisations like UNICEF. The company's Managing Director Dr. Graham Root says the Project Officer's role is the ideal job for a recent graduate.

He said: “We’re not looking for someone with much experience, just a person who is bright, ambitious and eager to learn from ourselves and our project managers in Asia and Africa; and who might eventually be happy to travel the world with the job working on projects that really make an impact on peoples’ lives.”

Yellow Brick offers challenging, paid internships across a diverse range of working environments in Jersey for a minimum of three months and many lead to permanent job opportunities. It’s Programme Manager Sally Gallichan said: “We want our graduates to realise that Jersey has a range of careers to offer graduates in addition to roles in finance and law.

“We currently have positions like the one at Montrose, plus others in engineering, agriculture, education and if there’s nothing on our books that a graduate finds interesting, we’ll try to source one they will.

“Many of these companies are internationally focused and are offering experiences and mentoring that will be invaluable to someone starting off in their career.”

The successful graduate will be mentored by Dr. Root and Janice Moore who own and run Montrose. Dr Root is an expert in public health with over 20 years experience working on the design and delivery of international health programmes in Africa and Asia. Janice Moore who is Director of Programmes and Operations is a development professional with 20 years’ experience in implementing projects around the world.

To apply you this role you need to be locally qualified in line with the States of Jersey population policy, be educated to degree level, and have graduated within the last two years.

Sally Gallichan said: "We have a huge range of diverse opportunities for recent graduates already on our books. Apart from Montrose, there are lots of other employers on the island crying out for excellent local candidates, and who are prepared to put time and effort into training and mentoring. We want to link our undergraduates and graduates up with these employers so they get the best start in their careers and Jersey retains the talent it has nurtured."
