Skin cancer survivor 'braves the shave' for charity

One islander will be in for a close shave this weekend to help support a local cancer charity, after losing her best friend and neighbours to the illness and experiencing melanoma herself.

Gillian Galli will be getting the chop for MacMillan Cancer Support Jersey as part of an annual community fundraiser by First Tower's Pomme D'Or Farm estate, and is asking for the island to chip in with donations ahead of the main event.

Gillian has already smashed her original £500 target, reaching nearly £1,000.

"I'm quite excited actually, I’m needing a good cut and I want to get my hair back to the original colour," she told Express. She added that it was "a bit scary", but noted it was for a good cause."

On why she has decided to do it, Gillian said that two well-known faces on her estate - including her downstairs neighbour - had passed away recently.

She also lost her best friend to cancer affecting the brain - she passed away on Mother's Day, having just been diagnosed.

Alongside some friends, Gillian has also experienced melanoma - skin cancer - herself.

Taking place at 15:30 on Saturday (28 August), the cut will form part of a wider fundraiser that the Pomme D'Or Farm community do each year through events like community walks or barbecues, raising money for several charities, including around £1,200 for the Woman's Refuge last year.

This year's event, which Gillian organised alongside a group of her neighbours, will see the estate participate in five games of 'Charity Bingo', including one for children, in aid of both MacMillan and Dementia Jersey.

"Last year's bingo was amazing, and most of the residents all here have been asking when we're going to do another one! So I think we're all pretty excited, and we've got some good raffle prizes as well," Gillian added.
