"You are not alone"

Wednesday 14 December 2022

Jersey's Dean has described how a special vigil at the Town Church this evening will give those affected by the island's recent twin tragedies a chance to find some solace.

The service was held following the explosion on Pier Road, which has claimed the lives of at last eight islanders, and the sinking of L'Ecume II in which all three crew died.

The Dean of Jersey – the Very Reverend Mike Keirle – said he hoped the vigil would offer "some solace, a focal point for our collective grief and an opportunity to stand in solidarity with those who mourn tonight."

The names of the 12 victims of the two tragedies were read out by Mr Keirle during the vigil, with a candle lit for each of those islanders to remember the "unprecedented and tragic events of this last week."

"You are not alone," said Mr Keirle.

Speaking with a "very heavy heart", the Lieutenant-Governor, Vice-Admiral Jerry Kyd, said last Thursday the "unthinkable happened" - and then on Saturday morning "Jersey once again woke up to the unimaginable news of another tragedy."

Vice-Admiral Kyd praised the "extraordinary actions of emergency services as first responders", reminding the congregation that there were still ongoing recovery efforts.
