Footballers, friends and family help kick off event to remember teenager

Friday 08 July 2016

Dozens of young footballers will be helping to kick off a big event this weekend to remember their friend who died tragically at the end of last year and to help raise money for other vulnerable young people.

Etienne Helie-Merrony was just 13 years-old when he ended his life in December and hundreds will be at a memorial day for him at St John's Recreation Grounds on Saturday afternoon.

A spokesperson for the family said: "Etienne was a happy and outgoing lad who would always have a massive smile on his face. He was a lovely boy and losing him so early was a massive tragedy to so many.

"We are hoping that as many people as possible will come and support this event so that we can remember the good times we shared with Etienne and hopefully raise awareness and funds for Mind Jersey as well."

A new report out by the Island's Independent Safeguarding Partnership Board revealed there are 60 teens here on the 'at-risk' register and who could be susceptible to suicide.

Earlier this week Etienne's old school Victoria College and local charity Mind Jersey organised the Island's first 'Promoting Healthy Young Minds Conference' which saw teachers, health professionals, caring agencies and, most critically, young people themselves – addressing the many challenges children face growing up today.

On the second day of the conference between 250 and 300 local teenagers took part in workshops on managing feelings and helping their peers.

Mind Jersey's Executive Director James Le Feuvre said: "We are so impressed that this group of young people want to remember their friend in this way and this provides a great opportunity to celebrate his life and also to raise awareness.

"It is really important that everyone remembers that they are not alone, there are lots of people who care and are there to help. Asking for help is important and can be anything from talking about a bad day or confiding in someone about a problem that is causing concern.

"Young people are encouraged to ask a parent, a mate or a teacher if they think they need help. Any funds raised vy this event will be used to support and extend our work with young people and we hope that it will be well supported."

The "Remembering Etienne" memorial day kicks off at 3 pm.
