Rapunzel chops off her hair for other little princesses

Saturday 13 March 2021

A 10-year-old Rapunzel is chopping her hair so that sick children who have lost their locks can benefit.

Sofia Hopley is asking islanders to help her reach her £550 goal, which would enable the Little Princess Trust to make one wig from her hair for a child who, due to illness, has none of their own.

Speaking about Sofia’s decision to get the trim, her Mum said it stemmed from wanting to not waste any of her hair after she had it cut.

"She’s always had the longest hair, and I think she just got a bit sick of it, and decided she wanted to cut off. But she didn’t want to just cut it off, and put it in the bin, she wanted do something with it,” she explained.

“So we spoke about the Little Princess Trust and I obviously explained what it was all about and what it did and how they made the wigs, and she decided herself that that’s what she wanted to do.

“She said, ‘Why should I cut my hair off and put it in the bin, when it can be made into a wig for someone who can use it?’”

Sarah said she thought that the fact it affected other children particularly touched Sofia, saying “she could understand the effect it would have, especially as she loves her hair.”

The fundraiser’s JustGiving page has already hit over £400 at the time of writing, and they are now trying for the final push to £550 to cover the cost of the wig before Sofia sits in the barber’s seat and gets the new trim.

Talking about the response, Sarah said: “I think we raised the £430 in two days, and people are just so proud of her.”

It’s not the first donation the Trust has had from an islander either this week - on Wednesday, Express reported on how Grand Hotel Therapist Simone Houghton took a whopping 23 inches off of her hair in support of the charity.
