Young people invited to sign up to £20 bus pass scheme

Monday 21 February 2022

Young people aged 18 and under are being invited to sign up for a new bus pass giving them unlimited travel for a year for £20.

The Avanchi18 card trial scheme, which will launch on 21 March, follows a successful push by Deputy Rob Ward to get the Government to fund the system, which he hoped would encourage more people to use the bus, reduce school traffic and ease the cost burden on low-income families.

The application process started on Saturday 19 February.

Anyone wanting an Avanchi18 card must provide a passport-style photograph. They will also need a Social Security registration card to prove that they are eligible.

Deputy Kevin Lewis said he was “looking forward to seeing how the trial progresses this year” and was “particularly keen to see the impact the scheme has on the number of children using the bus, and on the level of school traffic.”

“The application process will take time and we encourage Islanders to get their applications in early so we can process them in time for the start date,” LibertyBus Director Kevin Hart explained.

“We are trying to avoid having queues of people waiting for their cards to be processed in the bus station, so sending in your form online will ensure applications are processed as quickly as possible. Payment will need to be made upon collection of the card at Liberation Station, along with proof of the Social Security registration number.”
