Young traders go to market

Monday 01 February 2016

Local teenagers will soon be getting a taste of what it's like to be market traders.

Teams from four of the Island's secondary schools are competing at running their own businesses and will be going to market with their wares this month.

Each of the forty teams from Grainville, Haute Vallee, Jersey College for Girls and Victoria College are looking to win this year's Channel Islands Student Business Challenge and have been given £100 to get started and grow their business over the next few months.

They'll be trading until March, selling a range of goods from healthy snacks and drinks, cakes and sweet treats to jewellery, candles, key rings, soaps and gifts and will be looking to pick up some selling tips when they work alongside the tenants in the Central Market from 10 am until 4 pm on Saturday 27 February.

Market tenant chairman Bill Davies said: ‘This is a fantastic opportunity for students to gain valuable working experience in a competitive environment. We hope this event will inspire and encourage the next generation of young entrepreneurs to explore their own potential.”

Many of the teams will be donating part of their profits to charity. Over the last few years students’ contributions have raised nearly £11,000 for charities including the JSPCA, Oscar Maclean Foundation, CLIC Sargent and Macmillan.

The Channel Islands Student Business Challenge is run by Barclays, EY, Ogier and Sure.
