Youngsters get snappy for Liberation

Thursday 07 May 2015

Dozens of youngsters will be on a roll this weekend capturing the spirit of Liberation 70 on film.

The first 70 kids to apply for a camera from the Société Jersiaise will be getting snappy on 9 May and competing to help create a new archive of Liberation memories.

Société Jersiaise Photographic Archivist Gareth Syvret said: “Photography was banned during the Occupation and those rare images we do have of the Liberation by islanders are precious. It seems fitting that we are asking our young people to capture Liberation 70 on film.

“Most young people today will have only ever used a digital camera. Using film is a bit tougher so we’re not looking for technical quality so much as capturing the spirit of the day. We plan to create an exhibition of 70 of the best images later 2015.”

Along with the cameras, the Société’s International Photographer in Residence 2015 Tom Pope will be giving out tips to the young photographers on what to look out for behind the lens.

He said: “We will be looking for the images that best capture a sense of liberation, and we are sure that the young people will have a great time looking for unusual shots, and will be very creative in their approach.”

There’s a Nikon Coolpix S3700 camera up for grabs for the overall winner and a Nikon Coolpix L31 for the youngster aged 12 or under who takes the best photo. The best under-18 will win a place on the Archisle Photo Academy at Youth Arts Jersey with Tom Pope during May half term.

The competition is sponsored by Fotosound and will be judged by the Education Minister Deputy Rod Bryans, Gareth Syvret and Tom Pope.

The Société plans to exhibit the 70 best images later in the year.

Anyone under the age of 18 can enter and you can download the entry form here.

The forms have to be in by 4 pm on Friday.
