Hundreds of youngsters have been jumping into the pool at Jersey Marine Lake and learning how to take a dip safely in the open water, and this weekend is the last chance to join in.
The Royal National Lifeboat Association (RNLI) and Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) are running a 'Swim Safe' course in Jersey for the first time to get kids swimming better and more confidently in open water.
The sessions have been running all week and are for seven to 14-year-olds who can swim at least 25 meters in an indoor pool.
Coastal Safety Product Manager Pip Hare said: “We’re really excited to bring Swim Safe to Jersey for the first time this year. Learning all about how to stay safe at the beach and in the sea it’s a vital skill and we’re hoping to reach over 8,000 children across all our Swim Safe locations this year, which include: Bournemouth, South Shields, the Isle of Man, Bude and Lake Windermere.”
Head of Learn to Swim at the ASA Jon Glenn said: “Swimming in the sea is great fun, especially when you are on your summer holidays, but it is also a lot different to swimming in a pool. Open water can be very unpredictable; even calm, shallow waters can quickly become dangerous. Therefore, it is essential that both children and parents know how to stay safe.”
There are three sessions running on Saturday and Sunday for groups of up to 20 and you can book a place here.
