I’ve previously bemoaned the absence of gluten-free food at Café Ubé’s Jersey Airport location, but I was pleased to see improvements upon my most recent visit.
This month, our secretive, hard-to-please food reviewer Harry Smiles assesses Cafe Ubé at Jersey Airport and Fuel 2 Go in town...
Where the only options available to me at this café were once crisps and a small pot of carrots and peas with houmous, I found a variety of salads including the Korean-style Sticky Chicken Rice Box.

The assortment of greens, pickled cucumbers, mushrooms, sweet potatoes, carrots and kimchipacked on top of rice and chicken caught my eye and my appetite, while the price – £6.95 – sealed the deal.
It was as delicious as it looked. The rice was fragrant and tasty, the vegetables were expertly seasoned and the chicken was simply delightful – each bite brought a new mix of flavours and textures that complemented each other perfectly. Whilst the salad would have been more than delectable as it came, I found the kimchi brought a certain oomph, a je-ne-sais-quoi that elevated the flavours further.
It was simply a thoroughly refreshing meal that felt miles away from traditional airport fayre. It should serve as an example to others that not only nutritious and filling food can be made for airports, but that delicious and exciting gluten-free salads can be achieved with a little bit of imagination! Well done, this customer was Ubé-r pleased!
Since Fuel 2 Go opened on York Street earlier this year, I had been drooling over pictures of their açaí bowls. So, one morning, after too many cases of FOMO (fear of missing out for the uninitiated), I ventured over to their side of town to see what all the fuss was about.
Having done my research beforehand, I knew I wanted the Busy Bee bowl, which comes with granola, fresh banana, blueberries, bee pollen, chia seeds and honey. I requested it without the granola, explaining I had a gluten intolerance, and I was delighted to be told it was actually gluten-free!

Like the Ubé salad, the açai bowl was a feast for both the eyes and mouth. I was simply bowled over! The tartness of the açai berries and blueberries was perfectly balanced by the honey and bananas.I had never tried bee pollen and I thought it was a really lovely touch. The various textures –soft bananas, crunchy granola, silky açai - were truly delightful in the mouth.
At £9.50, I will admit I found it a bit pricey, but it was truly a generous portion and, being packed with good stuff, it kept me feeling full for a good time afterwards.
