As Chair of Helping Wings, Eveline Hawkin gives disabled and disadvantaged islanders a chance to experience the joy of flying.
Last weekend, the charity was able to fly 38 lucky islanders into the sky, in their first big outing since the pandemic.
Touching down from helping organise more events throughout the year, Eveline shared her bird's eye view of the island with Express, giving five aspects of Jersey she would like to see change...

Our unique environment needs nurturing. We must encourage everyone to care for Jersey and beyond. More efforts are needed to make people understand how fragile our environment is. Recently, a great amount of trees have been cut down when the opposite should happen. More trees…not less!

With a population of more than a 100,000, our government needs to put a stop to this influx of people especially when the infrastructure is just not there. We seem to be building more luxury houses/apartments when our young people are struggling to get on the housing ladder.

There is an excessive amount of cars on the island and this need to be controlled.
The government should finance public transport so that cars could be banned from the town centre. Better bus services covering country parishes would hopefully encourage people to leave their cars at home.

I love walking and cycling and do it on a daily basis. Rights of way are a very well kept secret…why? It is practically impossible to find any details about them.
A right of way is a right of way and everyone should have the right to enjoy them.

Plastic… we are all much better at taking our own bags with us when shopping but the real culprits are the businesses/supermarkets who still use an enormous amount of packaging, so much of it cannot be recycled and this is unacceptable if we are really serious about the environment and how we need to look after the planet for the future generations.
So much talking has been done about it but in reality, not a great deal is achieved. Maybe it’s up to us - the consumers to be more vociferous.
