Robbie Dark, Photographer: Five things I LOVE about Jersey

Friday 11 September 2020

Surf, St. Ouen, landscape, nature, friends...

The list goes on, as local photographer Robbie Dark takes us through five things he loves about Jersey.

1. Community

Jersey is often described as a magnet, which pulls people back from across the globe to come and live here.

That pull of Jersey is made stronger by the people that make up our island; and we have such an interesting bunch on this rock. There is something comforting about going to the beach or walking through town and seeing people you know. It’s as if you’re never too far from anyone.

2. Summer

In some ways Jersey is quite seasonal. Many people go away for the winter but come back to the island for the warmer months.

This influx of people and energy is what I love. The warmer temperatures make it easier to live life outdoors and many evenings are spent watching the sun set in St Ouen's Bay. There is no greater pleasure than surfing, eating and hanging out with friends and family under a pink and orange sky.

3 A sense of newness

Even after spending 20 years in Jersey there are still places I am yet to discover.

This sense of newness keeps things fresh and exciting. If you make the effort to explore a bit further you may just stumble upon a place you’ve never seen before. This diversity of landscape paired with the large tidal flow means the island is changing every minute.

4. Being close to nature

Nature serves as a way to balance our mind and body.

To settle and have a break from the intensity and speed of modern day living. What makes Jersey particularly great is the fact that nature is on our door step. We are never too far from a little adventure or a moment of peace and solitude.

5. The pleasure of leaving and coming back

It is completely possible for you to become frustrated by everything that makes this island so great.

Sometimes you want to travel further, and you don’t feel like saying hello to every second person in the high street. The perfect antidote is to leave. After spending time away, it might be that you begin to miss the island and long for it. On returning suddenly the familiarity and comfort of Jersey is appreciated. Through this new lens you begin to love this little island again.
