Big For Your (Football) Boots? Jersey Bulls to face Stormzy's team

Friday 13 October 2023

The football team owned by multi-award-winning musician Stormzy will be in Jersey this weekend to face the Bulls at their home ground.

At the beginning of the season, rapper Stormzy joined forces with Crystal Palace forward Wilfried Zaha to buy AFC Croydon Athletic.

Stormzy and Zaha followed in the footsteps of Hollywood actors and Wrexham AFC owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney earlier this year as they became the latest celebrities to purchase a football club.

The two stars both grew up around the corner from Croydon Athletic’s 3,000-capacity Mayfield Stadium in South London, and made the decision to invest in the club in order to "do what’s right for the local community".

The Jersey Bulls are set to welcome AFC Croydon Athletic to Springfield Stadium this Saturday, with the match kicking off at 15:00.

The Bulls said that AFC Croydon Athletic "will be wanting to put on a show when they visit the island this weekend, so we need your support to cheer our team onto a win".

An eight-game unbeaten run has lifted the Bulls to the top of the Combined Counties League Premier South table – but boss Gary Freeman is aware of the threat tomorrow’s opponents pose.

AFC Croydon Athletic recently changed managers and Freeman is wary of the potential for a “new manager bounce”.

The Bulls manager said: “For ourselves, hopefully we carry on with what we have done recently.

“We have built from a solid defence and have kept a few clean sheets. Croydon will be a very tough challenge. They have got some very good players and have a new manager this week and that often brings a bit of a bounce which is always a worry.

“We will have to be patient at times this season – we saw that on Saturday [in the 1-0 against Cobham] – and we know we have to be solid and not give them anything to build on.”
