Surfing GB Cup postponed due to poor conditions

Tuesday 08 October 2024

The Surfing GB Cup – which was scheduled to be held this weekend in St Ouen's Bay – has been postponed due to poor predicted surf conditions.

Organisers have announced that the national event, which was meant to take place in Jersey between 11 and 13 October, will instead commence on Friday 25 October.

Four national teams – England, Scotland, Wales and the Channel Islands – will take to the waves at St Ouen's Bay in a competition spanning individual and team categories.

The winners of each category will then have the chance to qualify for the GB Surfing Progression Squad.

The squad is made up of young surfers who have the potential to become future Olympians.

The first round of competitions will now take place on Friday 25 October, with the finals following on Sunday 27 October.

The line-up of competitors – which includes World Junior medallist Lukas Skinner for England, and star surfers Nathan Elms and Max Bennett for the CI squad is due to remain the same.

Event Director David Ferguson said: “The event has been months in the making. I’m grateful to all our volunteers, the RNLI, judges and sponsors.

We’ve got a great history of hosting some of the best surfing events in Europe and we’ve worked hard to ensure this one is just as memorable.

“We’re hoping for a good swell with favourable winds. Everyone is welcome to come along to the Watersplash where there will be plenty going on besides the surfing.”

Former British Champion and GB Surfing Director, Arlene Maltman, is hopeful that a local surfer will join the Olympic pathway in future.

“GB Surfing’s elite performance pathway aims to develop, progress and empower future champions," she said.

"I am very much hoping that will involve a local surfer in the future."

On the upcoming contest, Arlene added: “The GB Cup is a prestigious event in the surfing calendar.

The stage is set for what promises to be a high standard of British surfing talent.

"I’m sure our youngsters will be inspired, not only to take up the sport, but to perform on the world stage.”
