IslandHealth has said it’s “proud to share” that the latest beach clean by surgery staff was a success, after participants removed over 8kg of rubbish from local shorelines.
More than 20 members of staff and their families took to L’eree earlier this month to do their part in cleaning up the environment, working in partnership with the Clean Earth Trust.
The environmentally focussed organisation recently claimed that marine litter is a growing problem in Guernsey, despite a decrease in the total number of items collected compared to previous years.
Their 2024 report found that throughout the year 15,373 items were removed from Guernsey’s coast, by 387 volunteers over a total of 462 hours.
They helped with IslandHealth’s beach clean by providing equipment, guidance, and data collection tools to ensure the rubbish collected is properly recorded and disposed of, with IslandHealth stating their assistance was “key” in helping to make an impact.
With a large amount of waste still appearing on local beaches, IslandHealth says it has helped highlight the “importance of continued awareness and action to tackle marine pollution”.
The group’s Dr Zoe Way said the litter pick was about acting on a shared responsibility, “We’re incredibly proud of our team for stepping up and making a real difference”.
Dr Way continued: “This event was not only about cleaning up, but also about connecting with our environment and showing our shared responsibility to protect it.”
