Honorary Consul of the Republic of Latvia in Guernsey, Lilita Kruze said she was “delighted to update you once more on absolutely outstanding generosity from the Guernsey public”.

Speaking earlier this week she said:

“Today, through DHL, we sent away two boxes containing 271 items to the charitable organisation Labdarības Lapa in Latvia and five boxes with 727 items to Kyiv Regional Perinatal Centre and Zhytomyr Regional Perinatal Centre, both in Ukraine.

“I would like to thank again every single person in Guernsey who has donated to the Newborn Baby Hats Appeal. Thanks, also, to all staff and management at Guernsey Post and DHL Express, Guernsey for their continued support for the appeal.”

Ms Kruze said so far she has sent on 7,770 handmade items donated by Bailiwick residents. She is intending to send further parcels before Christmas too.

“Considering that winter is fast approaching with the weather getting much colder, I would like to encourage islanders to keep up the good work and donate if they can,” she said.

“It can take from 14 to 68 days for our humanitarian aid to reach the final destination in Ukraine. Therefore, I would also encourage folk in Guernsey to think about Christmas and crochet or knit festive items. Families with children or grandchildren might want to make a special Christmas card or write an encouraging message to a young family in Ukraine.”

Ms Druze has been closely following the situation in Ukraine, and said her relatives, friends, and compatriots are all standing firm in their support of the besieged country.

“BBC News has reported on multiple missile strikes all across Ukraine today (10 October).

“It is quite remarkable how one person (Vladimir Putin) can bring so much grief to so many. Absolutely innocent people in Ukraine are suffering. We all wish, this war had never started!”
