Beau Sejours changing facilities have seen a “major refurbishment”, as the Leisure Centre upgrades its long standing partnership with charity Guernsey Disability Swimming.
The upgrades so far include a new state-of-the-art ceiling hoist, with a movable, hygienic changing bench in the accessible changing room.
The shower and changing room have been completely rebuilt, and now feature contrasting wall colours to help visually impaired swimmers, and other enhanced safety supports have been installed such as a fold-out shower seat.
The upgrades were made possible thanks to charitable donations of more than £25,000, primarily from GDS, and the Cinven Foundation, which provided a “significant donation”.
According to Adrian Sarchet, the Chairperson of GDS, the upgrades have modernised Beau Sejours offering for swimmers with a disability.
“GDS is absolutely thrilled to continue its public/third-sector partnership with Beau Sejour,” he said, pointing to previous upgrades they’ve had a hand in.
“Previous projects have included GDS funding double-railings down the main steps into the pool, self-propelled poolside wheelchairs and the PoolPod (a revolutionary poolside lift which replaced the old medieval-looking ducking stool contraption).”
Mr Sarchet added: “This project provides a similar upgrade to Beau Sejour’s Changing Village and will promote the swim experience of swimmers with disabilities. GDS is indebted to the Cinven Foundation for its incredible generosity – this project would not have been possible without their support.”
Meanwhile, Steve Melbourne MBE, Recreational Service Inclusion Officer, also welcomed the improved inclusivity the upgrades offer to Beau Sejour.
“The new accessible changing and shower facilities at Beau Sejour Leisure Centre are a major step forward in inclusivity for the island,” he said.
“Thanks to the generous funding and close partnership with Guernsey Disability Swimming, this facility now offers a modern, dignified space that greatly improves access for disabled people, supporting their full participation in sport and leisure activities.”
