With Guernsey experiencing a prolonged period of hot and dry weather, the GSPCA has issued a public appeal for help in protecting local wildlife from dehydration.
The animal charity says the lack of rainfall and high temperatures can be particularly dangerous for small animals, as their natural water sources quickly dry up.
The charity’s manager, Steve Byrne, has highlighted that wildlife can be especially vulnerable at this time: “During prolonged dry weather, wildlife can suffer greatly from dehydration. Something as simple as a shallow bowl of water in your garden can make a huge difference.”
Mr Byrne added: “It’s a small act of kindness that can help save lives. We have been helping many, hedgehogs especially, that have been dehydrated and are currently housed in our temporary facilities while the BIG BUILD takes place to build a new Wildlife Hospital.”
The GSPCA also offered extra advice, including placing pebbles in the water bowls to allow insects to escape, keeping the water clean, and providing appropriate food for hedgehogs, such as meaty pet food.
The public’s help is vital in supporting the charity’s efforts and ensuring Guernsey’s native wildlife stays safe and healthy this summer.
Mr Byrne concluded: “Every garden can become a small sanctuary during the summer months. Together, we can all do our bit to ensure our wildlife stays safe and healthy.”
